Consider the age range of students

Consider tailoring playground equipment to suit the age range of students to enhance their play experience and safety. For example:

Early Years Foundation Stage: This stage of learning is all about exploration, imagination and socialisation with other children. When considering playground design for an EYFS area, think about equipment that will stimulate the pupils, as well as encourage social interaction in a safe environment. Products such as Sand & Water play tables, Mini Movers apparatus and Play Panels are a great start when considering your next playground project.

Key Stage One (Ages 5-7): When selecting playground equipment for Key Stage 1 students, it’s important to focus on items that support their burgeoning motor skills and imaginative play. Equipment such as low climbing structures, balance beams, and sensory play panels can provide safe and engaging opportunities for young children to develop their physical abilities. Additionally, including areas for imaginative play, like playhouses and themed structures, encourages creativity and social interaction among peers.

Secondary School playground equipment: When selecting playground equipment for secondary school students, it’s important to consider their age range and developmental needs. Teenagers require equipment that challenges their growing physical abilities while also providing opportunities for social interaction and mental engagement.

Opt for items such as climbing walls, obstacle courses, and outdoor fitness stations that can cater to their higher energy levels and encourage physical fitness. Additionally, incorporating spaces for team sports and creative activities can help address their diverse interests and promote overall well-being.

By selecting age-appropriate playground equipment, you create a safe and engaging environment that supports the diverse needs of students at different stages of their development.

Linking your curriculum to playground equipment

Enhance your school curriculum by integrating playground equipment that aligns with educational objectives and promotes active learning. Consider incorporating sensory play elements for nurseries to stimulate young minds and encourage exploration. For secondary schools, focus on equipment that enhances social skills through collaborative activities. Interactive structures like play panels can aid in developing cognitive abilities and creativity.

By linking playground equipment to specific curriculum goals, you create opportunities for hands-on learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting. Encouraging physical activity while reinforcing educational concepts can lead to a well-rounded educational experience for students.

Remember to assess the needs of your school community to tailor the playground equipment to best support the curriculum and overall learning objectives.

Inspiration From Our Case Studies

Case studies are a great way to convey inspiration and creative flair when it comes to choosing a design for your playground area. We are fortunate to have been involved in hundreds of school playground redesigns over the years and have amassed a great range of case studies, from SEN playgrounds to EYFS.

Here are some of our favourites over the past couple of years:

Greater Horseshoe School, Heathfield, Devon

Our brief was to create an impressive physical playground climbing structure for the pupils of Greater Horseshoe School. We also included a range of different trim trail types to encourage different styles of play and adventure throughout the school playground space. With a great expanse of area to play with, we really enjoyed installing our Rope Bridge climber and adventure playground elements.

EYFS Area - Seaton, Devon

Early Years Foundation Stage is always a really fun level of play to be involved with. For Seaton Primary, we were tasked with implementing a themed surface, with a number of climbing apparatus and outdoor play elements for everyone to enjoy. It’s always a pleasure to be involved with projects like these and see the pupils enjoy the play space as soon as it’s installed!

Recycled Plastic Trim Trails - Bickleigh Down Primary School

Made in the UK from plastic diverted from landfill, we installed a brilliant recycled plastic playground utilising a range of trim trails, clatter bridges and play game stations at Bickleigh Down Primary School. Enticing pupils to practise their balancing and coordination skills, the rubber mulch safety surface was also installed to ensure a safe landing if pupils were to fall off the apparatus. The rubber surfacing itself blended seamlessly with the trees surrounding the school playground.

Popular Playground Equipment Choices

When considering popular playground equipment choices, you may want to explore options such as recycled plastic playground equipment, trim trails, and thermoplastic playground markings. These choices offer sustainability, physical activity opportunities, and visual appeal to enhance your school playground. By incorporating these elements, you can create an engaging and safe play environment for children.
