Woodfield St George in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, had a large old area of artificial grass that was undulating with lumps and bumps everywhere. Not only was this unsightly, it was dangerous for children to run and play on, and the potential for trips and falls was high, so something needed to be done.
The existing surface had reached the end of its life and was causing problems right across the area:
Rather than patching over the problem, the old surface was lifted and the ground underneath it rebuilt, which is what gives a genuinely level finish. The job entailed:
The result is a bright, level and safe play area where children can run about and enjoy free-flow games, on a surface that stands up to daily use and needs very little looking after.
Where an old surface has started to lift, ripple or hold water, we can take it up, rebuild the base underneath and lay a new surface that stays level. Artificial grass of this kind is a free-play surface rather than an impact-absorbing one, so where there is climbing equipment in the same space we would specify a playground safety surfacing alongside it.
We have also put together a guide to which playground surfacing copes best with British weather, and you can see another artificial grass installation in our Artificial Grass Trim Trail at Lochinver House School. There are plenty more completed projects to browse in our case studies.
