Our Rhino Play design and install team had a field day creating this brand new play unit for Widewell primary school. The Plymouth-based primary school requested the piece of bespoke playground equipment which children of all ages and abilities can enjoy during their break times.
Widewell primary school contacted Rhino Play to design and install a bespoke shipwrecked play boat. The only criteria given was that it needed to fit within a set rubber matted area and be suitable for KS1 and KS2 children, with as many adventurous and challenging aspects as possible.
At Rhino Play we pride ourselves on creating unique and attractive play areas which can be designed to fit into areas of any size. We wanted to create an entirely custom-made boat, ship and nautical-themed climbing frame with traverse and climbing wall elements.
The HMS Widewell was redesigned twice to ensure as many ‘adventurous and challenging’ elements as possible were included which would appeal to both children in KS1 and KS2. The ship was installed in three separate sections, with a vertical net climber and trapeze swing as connector aspects across the centre of the play area. Lots of climbing aspects including climbing walls and a climbing ramp a frame and ramp and net climbers have been incorporated into the design, providing children of all ages with a range of different challenging aspects that they can enjoy.
The timber-framed HMS Widewell was designed to be installed on an area of existing rubber mulch surfacing for safety purposes. We made sure to incorporate as many nautical-themed aspects of the shipwreck as possible; we constructed the play area in a boat shape, with a bow, stern, rigging and portholes helping children ignite their imaginations, where they can sail the high seas, walk the plank and so much more!
Adding new outdoor elements and equipment to your school’s playground is a great way to help encourage children to be active outdoors, socialise with one another, problem-solve and increase their physical fitness. With bespoke playground equipment from Rhino Play, you can choose the colours, size and theme of your playground, while also having a say in the activities and elements included in the build.
The newly installed shipwreck play unit at Widewell Primary helps children build their confidence and provides ample opportunities for a wider range of play, including:
As well as allowing the children to enjoy the area and help them develop the following skills:
