Timber Trim Trail Replacement;
In the summer holidays of 2026 one of our projects was to rip out & replace the old timber trim trail for Learning Academies Trust (LAT) for their primary academy of Shakespeare, in Honicknowle, Plymouth.
We took out all of the old timber equipment in their Years 1 & 2 playground, leaving just the rubber stepping posts & wet pour safety surfacing in place.
We offered the school a new trail in either our Redwood laminated timbers or our brown recycled plastic. The school chose the timber due to a tight budget & so during the summer holidays we replaced the existing trail with new, changing around the equipment types & styles in many areas whilst still providing some great facilities for years 1 & 2 to improve their balance, co-ordination & core strength during play & PE.
The project key points are;
1. Replacing the old timber equipment rather than just repairing, as repairing tends to cost more in the longer run.
2. Re-using & recycling the non rotting rubber stepping posts into the new scheme & working with them to reduce waste & cost.
3. Re-using & recycling the existing wet pour rubber surfacing into the new scheme & working with it avoid waste disposal & cost.
4. Allowing the school to chose their material type.
5. Providing the flexibility to create a scheme that fits into the existing area.
6. Completing before the school returns.
7. Designing for the appropriate age range equipment & abilities, challenging some & offering numerous physical challenges.
8. Creating a scheme that can still be interacted with, if not accessed by, wheelchair users.
9. Patch repairing wet pour rubber surfacing to keep the project costs down & still allow the project to happen with a restricted budget.
10. Our ability to offer the complete service from design, manufacture & installation.
