Superb work at St Marychurch – Torquay, Devon – September 2025

During the summer holidays of 2025, our teams were busy at St Marychurch C of E Primary School in Torquay, Devon, completing a comprehensive playground transformation. The staff of St Christophers Multi Academy Trust contacted Rhino Play after seeing our exemplary installations at other schools in their network. Stuart from our team conducted an initial site assessment, meeting with site manager Jamie and estates lead Nick to discuss their vision for an exciting new play space.

Sustainable Removal and Preparation Works

The project began with the careful removal of an aging wooden play ship and deteriorating rubber mulch surfacing. The existing surface had been poorly installed without proper base preparation, necessitating complete removal before new installation could commence. Demonstrating our commitment to environmental responsibility, we utilised specialist rubber recycling skips for the surfacing material, as old rubber cannot be disposed of in standard landfill skips. Additionally, all wooden play ship timbers were carefully salvaged and directed to recycling channels for repurposing in other projects, minimising environmental impact.

Following thorough consultation, the school and trust selected our impressive William IV multi-play system – a comprehensive play structure offering exceptional play value through multiple integrated elements:

• Corrosion-resistant stainless steel ladders providing alternative access routes
• Distinctive vertical crooked climbing wall featuring multicoloured grip sections
• Visually stimulating roofs in blue, green, red and yellow creating distinct play zones
• Ergonomically designed angled ramp with secure grips enhancing accessibility
• Strategically positioned fixed walkway replacing the previously planned tunnel

To ensure exceptional longevity in the often damp Devon climate, we enhanced the pressure-treated redwood posts with galvanised steel feet, effectively eliminating any risk of ground-level timber rot. This premium construction detail significantly extends the installation’s lifespan, representing excellent long-term value for the school’s investment.

Advanced Safety Surfacing Solutions

Our comprehensive approach to safety surfacing incorporated multiple specialist materials tailored to the specific site requirements:

• Professional installation of weed-proof membrane across the entire 75m² soil area
• Precision application of aggregate base layer compacted to 50mm thickness
• Premium bonded rubber mulch safety surfacing laid at 40mm thickness throughout
• Expert bevelling techniques creating smooth transitions to surrounding turf areas
• Supplementary rubber grass mats extending the safety zone without sacrificing valuable playing field space

This innovative combination of safety surfacing solutions addressed the school’s specific request to preserve their natural grass playing area while ensuring comprehensive safety coverage around the play equipment. The rubber grass mats provide essential impact attenuation while allowing grass to grow through, maintaining the natural aesthetic of the school grounds.

The completed installation has delivered a fantastic new recreational facility that will serve St Marychurch Primary School for many years to come.
