Musgrove Park Hospital’s children’s unit, in Taunton, Somerset, kindly invited us back after our previous very successful play project a few years ago.
This time the staff wanted us to redevelop the very run down outside area that sits immediately outside of their waiting rooms. The area is surrounded by walls & along with it’s old patchwork of flooring & sorry looking loose pieces of equipment, it was in dire need of a facelift!!
So we were invited in to completely re-design the area, uplift the appearance, as well as making the very limited outdoor space as appealing, friendly, fun & welcoming. We removed all of the old surfacing whilst the hospital’s own team gave the buildings a lick of paint & tidied them up. We installed our fun & compact HMS Dartmouth play ship giving the children opportunities to climb, slide, role play & be active.
We then created a very fitting ‘sea themed play area’ safety surface using a short pile artificial grass & inset various sea creatures within this, mixed within a blue & green base. The effect of this uplifted the colour & brightness of the area, giving it far more appeal than previously seen.
For parents, carers & those just wanting or needing to just rest, we also provided a Corner Planter with seats, covered by a UV shade sail, giving seating, planting, shade & a lovely spot to watch the children play.
To give more appeal we also installed our non rotting HDPE interactive wall panels giving the children activities like:
A hospital courtyard like this one comes with real constraints – limited footprint, surrounding walls, and a need for equipment that works for children who may only have a few minutes to play between appointments. Every piece chosen here was picked with that in mind:
It’s this kind of thinking – getting the most play value out of every square metre that makes a real difference in settings like hospitals, where outdoor space is often at a premium but still needed just as much.
Now very much loved by the staff & children, this area offers a bright & appealing setting for those who wish to use it during their visits.
