Brilliance at Britannia Royal Naval College – June 2022

Rhino Play recently had the honour to work closely with the Military of Defence (MOD) at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon. The Royal Naval College is a prestigious college set in the beautiful surroundings on the bank of the River Dart, overlooking the port town of Dartmouth.

How Did Rhino Play Help Britannia Royal Naval College?

The Britannia Royal Naval College wanted to replace their old and dilapidated playground with brand new, high-quality play equipment that children of the officers and visitors can go and enjoy. The college wanted to incorporate the maritime values of the Royal Navy, as well as providing visiting children with a fun and unique area where they can be preoccupied during talks, ceremonies and events.

The college is often visited by important dignitaries, so asked Rhino Play to design and provide a unique fun and safe environment, which would be visually appealing as well as entertaining for children of all ages and abilities.

What Did Rhino Play Install For The Royal Navy College?

Here at Rhino Play, we have a wide variety of playground equipment, designed with children in mind, encouraging them to run, jump, slide, and climb either individually or as part of a group. The college had specified they wanted several elements included in the new playground which tie in with the maritime theme, for obvious reasons.

To ensure we matched their brief, we designed and installed a range of bespoke play equipment including:

Also included in the new playground was a sheltered roofed table, with sea creatures positioned on the roof. The sheltered seating area will allow parents or guardians to watch over the children as they play and enjoy the new playground.

What Did The Royal Naval College Have To Say About The New Playground?

The brand new play area was opened by the Fleet Commander, Vice Admiral Andy Burns CB OBE, while he was visiting the college for their officer cadets passing out parade. As the guest of honour for the Easter parade, Andy Burns was asked to officially open the playground for the young children in attendance to enjoy.
Warrant Officer Reggie Slaughter, Base Warrant Officer for BRNC said: “The installation of this facility will enhance the “lived experience” for the families of our staff and officer cadets. We are committed to including the wider service family in our day-to-day business and this project is a big step in our ability to achieve this. The comments of excitement from our families are a clear indicator of how popular this project has been.”
The previous play area at the college was installed about 15 years ago and was looking worn, dated, and beyond economical repair.
Reggie continued “I applied for a grant through the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes Fund, which was successful and, through a liaison with a local company “Rhino Play” of Newton Abbot, we designed a bespoke themed play area.”
