Braunton Academy Sports Shelter, North Devon – May 2025

Rhino Play was delighted to once again work with Braunton Academy in North Devon, where our team was tasked with designing a robust, specialist sports shelter. The structure needed to serve multiple purposes – from sheltering students during lunchtimes to providing coverage for sports events and outdoor learning sessions, even in the fierce Atlantic winds.

Designing For Coastal Conditions

This project posed some unique challenges. The exposed site frequently experiences strong winds blowing in off the Atlantic, requiring a shelter with exceptional structural strength and stability. Additionally, the chosen location included existing drainage channels which needed to remain accessible, meaning the shelter’s footprint and drainage design had to be planned with precision.

To meet these requirements, our design team created a bespoke 10m x 5m steel-framed shelter fitted with a robust roof that drains directly into the surrounding gullies. The shelter is mounted on galvanised steel feet to eliminate ground rot and maintain long-term durability, even in harsh coastal conditions.

Features That Combine Safety And Comfort

To make the shelter practical for sports use, we installed sports rebound fencing across the front 70% of the structure. This prevents balls from striking the seating area while still allowing visibility and airflow. Clear roof panels provide plenty of natural light, helping to create an inviting atmosphere for students and staff.

At the top of the shelter, wind deflectors were incorporated to reduce turbulence and provide extra protection from the elements – essential for a school so close to the Atlantic coast.
