Last year we at Rhino Play SW were asked by the staff of Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset to design & quote for a play area for their Oak children’s ward. The area, set within a quadrangle & surrounded by buildings & with floors below, was a challenge! In 2023 the staff successfully managed to gain the funding for this fantastic new addition to their hospital.
The unit had to be freestanding, but heavy duty enough to be able to withstand constant use, weathers & provide a long & appreciated lifespan for the children using it. We designed a unit that was all of this, that broke down into sections so that it could be carried through corridors & wards & small doors, to reach it’s intended location.
The play castle features a slide, two play towers with floors at 900mm high which were the right height for the fall protection rubber pads under artificial grass underneath. The castle even has arrow slits, shields, flags & a portcullis too! There’s a climbing ramp, stainless steel ladder bars & even bench seats inside. Fabulous for creative play as well as somewhere to go off to if no-one else is around!
We fitted a shade sail that provides some much needed UV shade & shelter that makes the area more usable for more of the year.
On the walls of the Oak Ward buildings, we fitted interactive HDPE Activity Panels, these provide play facilities that didn’t take up any room, could be used by those with most abilities & even with just a few minutes available.
The result of our makeover at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton has been fantastic & with truly great feedback too.
