Meadow Primary asked Rhino Play to design a bespoke traverse wall to add some additional play equipment to an unused edge of their school field. The brief was to create a wall that physically challenges children with varying levels of difficulty, a play unit that could be used during breaktime, but also as a curriculum fulfilling educational piece and to encourage more social interaction and teamwork. The space available was sited between two established trees and close to an existing footpath and the school wanted the low-level traverse wall to have a safety surface/all-weather access surface.
After a thorough site inspection, we got to work designing and creating a fun, educational and multi-level difficulty traverse wall. With constant dialogue with the school, we designed a product that met all of the school briefs, specifications and criteria. We submitted some colourful visual designs along with the quotation and Meadow Primary loved the concept.
The designed unit would be a 12.4m double sided traverse wall, with resin hand and foot grips creating different challenge paths. The wall is divided into four 2.5m sections linked by stainless steel traverse bars. The bars not only add a different experience for the climber, but they break up the solid look to the wall and help with issues restricting adult monitoring and supervision. As an additional difficulty level, the wall has angled bouldering sections, these outcrops jut out from the wall creating overhangs and challenges for even the most seasoned child climber.
The bespoke wall combines excellent skill level traversing with great play value. Children will have hours of fun and the potential for great learning and educational development. It adds physical challenge with social interaction and teamwork play.
The unit includes:
The unit was to be installed on well-maintained grass so didn’t require safety surfacing, however the school opted for an extended grass-matting system to create a more all year-round play unit. Rhino Play even supplied a ‘how to use’ guide, which would assist in teacher led P.E. classes.
A traverse wall is a great play unit for restricted spaces, we can design them to be single or doubles sided. They can fit to, or up against existing walls. They can be free-standing in a central space to allow for double sided use and they can accommodate many children at once. Combining play and educational uses the walls offer a great solution to incorporating fun into P.E. lessons. Children watching can help observe, teach, advise and improve their peers’ climbing styles during lessons, whilst the climbers get the chance to really push themselves physically.
These units are a great way to improve your play area and to develop and improve a child’s physical and emotional wellbeing. They also help promote social interaction and teamwork.
