What Is A MUGA? A Guide For Schools And Councils

October 15, 2026 Playground Equipment

What is a MUGA? A MUGA, or multi-use games area, is an enclosed outdoor sports space designed so that several different sports can be played on one surface. For schools, local authorities and community groups, it is one of the most practical ways to make a single piece of land work hard all year round.

In this guide, we explain what a MUGA is used for, what goes into one and what to think about when planning a MUGA play area of your own.

What Is A MUGA Used For?

The clue is in the name. Rather than building a separate pitch or court for each sport, a MUGA brings them together in one enclosed space with a shared surface and multi-sport line markings. Depending on the layout, the same area can host:

  • Five-a-side football
  • Basketball and netball
  • Tennis and short tennis
  • Hockey and other ball games

In schools, a MUGA is used for PE lessons during the day, ball games at break and lunch, and after-school clubs. In parks and villages, it gives young people a safe, enclosed space to play sport in the evenings and at weekends. Because the surface is designed for year-round use, a MUGA keeps sport going when grass pitches are waterlogged or closed for the winter.

What Makes Up A MUGA?

Every MUGA is designed around the site and the people using it, but most share the same four building blocks.

The Surface

The surface is the heart of a MUGA, and the right choice depends on which sports you want to play and how heavily the area will be used. Sand-filled needle punch surfaces are a popular choice, as the interlocking fibres hold the sand in place rather than letting it get kicked about, which reduces upkeep. They come in a variety of colours and designs. Artificial grass is another option where you want a softer, more natural look. Explore our full range of playground surfacing.

Rebound Fencing

MUGAs are enclosed by rebound fencing, which keeps balls in play and stops them bouncing out onto paths, roads or neighbouring land. A good rebound system is strong, rigid and vandal resistant, with security toppings available where needed. Gates can be designed to give level access for wheelchair users.

Goal Ends And Hoops

Goal ends combine a football goal with a basketball hoop above, so two sports share the same end of the court. They can be built into the fencing for a neat, enclosed finish.

Line Markings

Multi-sport line markings let you switch between games without changing anything on the court. Colour-coding each sport keeps the lines easy to follow. Take a look at our sports court markings for ideas.

Planning A MUGA: What To Consider

A MUGA is a long-term investment, so it pays to think through a few key questions before you start.

  • Which sports matter most? The sports you prioritise will shape the surface, the markings and the size of the court.
  • Who will use it, and when? A MUGA used only by one school during the day has different needs to one shared with the local community in the evenings and at weekends.
  • How much space do you have? MUGAs can be designed for compact school sites as well as larger community spaces, and the layout can be adapted to fit awkward corners.
  • What are the ground conditions like? Drainage and the existing ground make a big difference to how the surface performs, especially through the winter.
  • Is it accessible? Level access, wide gates and a firm, even surface help make sure everyone can join in.

All of this is covered during a free site visit, when our playground design and planning team will measure the space, look at the ground and talk through how you want to use it.
